Introduction to Automotive Technology

This course will introduce students to career choices in, and basic skills related to, the automotive industry. Topics covered include basic shop safety, an overview of electrical principles and automotive systems, and proper use of tools and diagnostic instrumentation.

EGR 11    1 credit
Introduction to Engineering Design

This course is an introduction to the major engineering disciplines. Basic concepts in engineering are covered in an integrated manner to: illustrate basic concepts in the context of real applications; illustrate a logical way of thinking about problems and their solutions; and convey the excitement of the profession. These goals are attained through analysis, construction, and testing of various projects that incorporate concepts.

Computer Applications in Technology

This extremely interactive course is an introduction to an important dimension of college success: computer orientation and implementation of hardware and software applications in technology. Using Microsoft Office and other applications, students will use various software packages to create documents, spreadsheets, graphs, databases and presentations. And they will utilize this knowledge to solve problems and transfer information via electronic media.

NOTE: These courses meet Monday and Wednesday at BCC from 4:00p.m. – 5:50p.m.

GIS 11    3 credits
Introduction to Geographic Information Systems

How is the world mapped? How is data collected and analyzed to build better communities? How do we find out precisely where we can or cannot build new structures? How does GPS work, exactly? GIS is an emerging discipline in the US and the Geospatial Industry is growing faster than ever before. This course is an introduction to this emerging technology that provides students with a state-of the-art laboratory environment to analyze geographic data for modeling spatial relationships between different objects and people on the earth. This exciting new course asks important questions, too:

• In light of Hurricane Sandy’s devastation of lower Manhattan, how far are bodies of water from residential areas and how many houses may be exposed to flooding in case the river overflows?
• How many people living in New York City may be exposed to air pollution?
• How do we reconstruct archeological sites?
• How are maps from space made?

These questions help students to understand why and how certain policy decisions are made (sometimes referred to as “urban planning”) and the careers available to them as a result.

High School juniors and seniors who have passed the NYS English Language Arts (ELA) Regents with a score of 75+ or received a 480+ on the verbal/math section of the SAT or a 50+ on the verbal/math section of the PSAT are eligible to take any one of the College Now classes below.

PSY 11     3 credits
Introduction to Psychology

How can you be understood scientifically? This introductory course explores the role the scientific method has played in shaping how we understand human behavior, paying particular attention to the growth and development of personal motivation, the emotions and mental health, learning, intelligence, and personality evaluation.

SOC 11    3 credits
Introduction to Sociology

How do you relate to all of the social changes that take place in the world? One way to figure this out is through and introduction to the scientific study of human life as a form of group life. Students will examine the relationship between culture and individual personality; courtship, marriage and the family; religious behavior; education and communication; and theories of social stratification and social change.
